Names?!

I get so excited when hearing new babies' names and especially love the stories and thought process behind those names. Out of all the names in the world, parents select that very special one for their precious little baby, and to me this makes that particular name, whatever it is, so wonderful. Even when not pregnant, I read a few name blogs and love to get in on name discussions.

But I CANNOT decide on a first name for our little one. I just keep adding names to an already long and varied list. So I am asking for your suggestions. Due to an intense superstition, I will not name her until she is born, but I would love to hear your ideas. Please?

Some must-haves:
Basically it must be a name traditionally used for girls, not contain creative or phonetic spellings (the child already has to spell out Xanthos for everyone), and sound good when said with Xanthos (you can make some good tongue twisters).

A few other things (but not necessary):
I do gravitate toward names that are considered old fashioned, but I am VERY open!! Nothing too common, but there are many beautiful names used often. I am also interested in "international" names (i.e. Greek, Italian, Hispanic, French, and Scandinavian).

You should check out this website. You enter the names of other children/names you like and it brings up names that fit along the same lines.

I think Nymbler is fun and I get a little crazy with it. I've done that before and here are some of the names I get:

Lena
Helena
Genevieve
Jane
Tess
Antonia
Caroline
Grace
Ella
Effie
Adeline
Charlotte

Ah girls' names...well, you know I love Charlotte & Caroline, both excellent choices. : ) A friend of mine just named her baby Stella Jane and I absolutely love that too. I love the name Tess but it's such a mouthful with Xanthos...boo...there's always Tessa, but I really just like Tess. Another one I have always loved, partially because it was my French host 'mom's name, is Sophie, which I feared was becoming too popular when I had Anthony, but I really don't hear it that much (nothing like Madison/Madeleine/Ella/Emma anyway....among kids, I know one Sophie & one Sophia.)
George & I both always really liked Natalie too. It rolls off the tongue nicely with Xanthos...but maybe since you already have an 'N' name, it's less enticing.
And my list goes on and on...like you, I think I'd just have a hard time narrowing down my list if I ever had the opportunity to name a girl!

Last night while I was looking through more names the boys got very mad at me because they are totally serious when they say they want to name the baby Mary Maria. I tried to explain that it is basically the same the name (not to mention the most popular name in history), but they have formed a very solid opinion. I do like the sound of Marie and Maria (the ee sound at the end sound good with Xanthos, like Natalie), but not really considering it.

Carol,

I have always loved Stella and Natalie, but one of my best friends in MN has a Stella and a Natalie. That always makes it harder to use the name. But Stella is not too long, which I like, and not easily nicknamed, which I love. We both actually like Tess, but you are right, the "s" at the end makes it awkward with Xanthos, so it is out. And I am okay with another "N". I kind of Naomi, but it's not quite the right one.

How about Violet or Eliza Jane? Can't wait to hear the final result! See you tomorrow!

From Tatum:

We've narrowed our list somewhat. Here are a few good ones that didn't make the cut: Cora, Lola, Jane/Janie, Ivy, Natalie, Lyla, Isla. I, of course, still love the name Sophie, but it is VERY popular right now. You've got to know she would be known as "Sophie X." all through school. Trust me! I have a "Sophie J."

Jeremy first said Carlos before he knew it was a girl - come on - Carlos Xanthos - sounds like a Puerto Rican special agent. As for girl names, Jeremy says Elizabeth with a "z" because her full name would be worth over a 100 points in Scrabble! He also wants me to put down "Q"uinn Xanthos - more points in Scrabble and just to give the kid the initials Q.X. As for MY opinion...I don't have one. I am really bad at naming our kids (Evan's lucky he has a name - I was seriously considering John Doe) so I will have a conference with Christa and we will get back to you on this one! By the way - congrats on girl #2! YAY!

love...Sara

Sara's comment is great! We had the hardest time naming Jessica. I'm still not sold on it (she's 5 months old) but what can I do now? (-: We call her Jessie and Jessie Lou. I like Charlotte (my sister's name or I would have given it to Jessica) and Elizabeth and Rebekah (of course). Good luck!!
